Changwon City Hosts ‘Korea·World Chinese Entrepreneurs Business Week 2020’ Video Conference

Agrees to develop and collaborate on areas of mutual interest based on continued exchange

Changwon City (Mayor Huh Sung-moo) is currently pursuing to host the ‘Korea·World Chinese Entrepreneurs Business Week 2020 (K·WCEB 2020)’ to strengthen international exchange and explore ways to enter global markets and attract investment in the era with COVID-19. And on October 7, Changwon hosted a video conference with Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (THAICC) to promote exchange and strengthen collaboration between Korean and Chinese businesses.

The video conference, which was held to discuss ways to ensure a successful ‘K·WCEB 2020’ and build a close partnership, was the fourth video conference following conferences with Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Aug. 26), Indonesia Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Sept. 24), and The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (Sept. 29).

The conference was held as an online meeting considering the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants from Korea included Mayor of Changwon City Huh Sung-moo, Special Advisor on Policy Lee Sang-gyu, KCCCI President Song Guk-pyeong, and KBCCCI President Beom Dae-bok, while THAICC President 임초흠 and members of the Secretariat took part as overseas panelists.

The World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention (WCEC), which is a central organization for Chinese living abroad, has three chair countries, including THAICC, along with SCCCI (Singapore) and CGCC (Hong Kong). Established in 1910, THAICC has a strong influence in the various areas of the business circle of Thailand and contributes to the country’s economic development based on its strong network and many members.

During the conference, panelists freely discussed ways to pursue the K·WCEB 2020 and agreed to continue close collaboration for the successful hosting of the event.

Along with sharing opinions on the direction of the event, panelists shared meaningful time reaffirming their commitment toward close collaboration for mutual development and partnership between the two countries.

The Thai government, especially, showed great interest in eco-friendly energy-based industries and green car industry as a way to respond to climate change.

To this end, Changwon Mayor Huh Sung-moo introduced Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Bumhan Industries that have global competitiveness in LNG power generation and fuel cells as well as energy projects, and successfully drew the interest of President 임초흠 and THAICC members.

In addition, the Mayor introduced in detail the railway project capacity of Hyundai Rotem so that it can take part as a business partner in the various railway projects Thailand plans to pursue. He also asked the CEO of the company in charge of the private investment high-speed rail project that will connect Thailand’s 3 airports to visit Korea or hold a video conference so that Hyundai Rotem can be fairly and objectively assessed as a potential partner.

Panelists from Korea also proposed Thai-Chinese capital investment in large-scale SOC projects in Changwon such as Masan Marine New Town, Ungdong Tourism and Leisure Complex, and development projects in Jinhae Haengam and Nampo region, and both parties agreed to collaborate on a potential investment between Thai-Chinese entrepreneurs and Changwon City during the Business Week in November.

Huh Sung-moo, Mayor of Changwon City, said “I will focus on bridging a partnership between energy and railway companies in Changwon and Thai-Chinese entrepreneurs to enable our companies to become Thailand’s new and trustworthy business partners,” and added “I will do my best together with THAICC President 임초흠 to lead the way for Thailand and Changwon, Korea, to achieve mutual growth and overcome the COVID-19 crisis.”
